Pain Management

Overview

Chronic pain affects an estimated 86 million American adults.  It can lead to loss of employment, depression, isolation and anxiety. The Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University Pain Management Center provides outpatient multi-disciplinary assessment and management of patients with chronic pain issues, including reflex sympathetic dystrophy, nerve damage, complex neurological problems, neuropathies, muscular strains, and pain from cancer injuries.

Some of the minimally invasive procedures that are provided include selective nerve root injections, transforaminal and interlaminar spinal injections, radiofrequency lesioning and ablation, IDET, percutaneous discectomy, vertebroplasty, spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal pumps, sympathetic nerve blocks and trigeminal nerve blocks.

The STEPP program (Supportive Training and Education for People with Pain) is an 8-week, multi-disciplinary group program for patients suffering with chronic non-malignant pain.  Since its inception in the spring of 2003, the STEPP program has helped patients better manage their pain, improve everyday functioning and gain some meaure of control over pain using behavioral modification, exercise and instruction, and psychological strategies.

Dr. Robert Swarm, Medical Director, who is ABMS Certified, Anesthesiology, Pain Management, supervises the program.   Five anesthesiologists with advanced training and certification in Pain Management, a full-time psychologist, physical therapists and registered nurses staff the Pain Management Center.  In addition to the Center's outpatient services, acute care for inpatients is also provided.

Two full time physicians are also available at our Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital facility located at 969 North Mason Road, Suite 240, Creve Coeur, Missouri.
